A new site to better serve the region
About GEDC
The Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission (GEDC) is a WA Government agency responsible for promoting positive social and economic change across the state’s Goldfields-Esperance region.
As an existing client, GEDC reached out to us to make some changes to their site, but it quickly became apparent that redeveloping the website would be a better way to achieve this goal. By going in this direction, we would be able to ensure that their new site was built on a fully supported and up-to-date platform, minimising security risks and maximising usability.
The challenge
GEDC were no longer happy with how their previous site looked. They wanted to give it a modern spin by improving their visual presence and bringing in some new interactive features. However, they were limited by their old site's content management system.
Building awareness of GEDC was also a priority. The agency services a vast area of the state’s southeast, but not all communities were aware of the support GEDC could provide.
They were also mindful of accessibility and user navigation and wanted to ensure the new site met the requirements set out by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2.
The solution
It was decided that the best approach and solution for GEDC was to redevelop the website using a custom instance of WordPress.
To showcase the region's must-see attractions, a custom interactive map module was created.
We also developed a more seamless approach for the management and viewing of PDF docs and reports on the site to make it easier for the agency to share information and for users to access it.
Finally, from design through to development and launch, we prioritised accessibility and usability.
The results
The site was launched at the end of June 2024. A data audit of the new site at the end of August revealed a number of improvements compared to the previous site:
- Users: +18% total users, +22% new users
- Sessions: +5% total sessions
- Page views: +7% total page views
Our accessibility testing also confirmed the site was WCAG 2.2 AA compliant upon completion.
