Accessibility

What makes for the best government website design? Accessibility. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) outline the core principles of accessibility online, from visual design and web development to the readability of content. By creating websites with reference to the WCAG, we ensure that your site can be accessed by as many people in your community as possible.

Our local government website design and development process for best results

Step 1: Discovery

Based on your tender requirements, we’ll prepare a Request for Proposal informed by data analysis that’s optimised for your unique organisation's needs. We are well-versed in government website requirements and are perfectly positioned to provide bespoke solutions. We’ll also finalise the requirements for any API integrations during this process.

Step 2: User experience requirements

We’ll start by creating 2.2 AA accessible User Experience wireframes that show you the layout of pages on your new site. These will be prototyped so you can navigate through the structure of your website and identify any critical user journey issues.

Step 3: Design

Accessibility is at the forefront of all of our design decisions. We will work with you to understand your preferences for website look and feel. We’ll then create a design that aligns with these preferences and meets accessibility requirements.

Step 4: Development and QA testing

Once your custom site has been developed, our expert testing team will complete technical, functional and device testing to ensure the website is top shelf on all platforms.

Step 5: Population and training

We’ll lead CMS training with you and your team so that you can begin to populate the site. We understand that this process is very important and we can adjust our training delivery to suit your organisation. There are usually hundred of pages that need population, so our approach to delivering the site is a mix of an agile and waterfall approach to ensure efficient population.

Step 6: Go live

At ALYKA, we understand the importance of security and data integrity, so our local government websites are hosted locally at the incredibly secure NextDC P2 located in the Perth CBD. P2 delivers a level of data centre quality, security and engineering brilliance that surpasses industry benchmarks and champions the world’s highest standards for data centre design, construction, and operational excellence.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a local government website cost?

The price will ultimately depend on what you need your site to do. From the CMS you choose to the number of modules you need, there are multiple factors that will affect how much your site costs. That’s why we start all projects with a kick-off meeting where we gain an in-depth understanding of your website needs and goals. From here, we can develop a plan of attack and provide you an accurate and informed quote.

What support can I expect once my site is completed?

Once your local government website is live, there are a number of support options available. If you have specific ongoing projects you want to undertake with your new site, we offer a Success Retainer package. If you want help-desk-style support for questions as they arise, then our Support Retainer package is the right support option for you.

Find out more about support options here.

Do you build websites that are mobile responsive?

Yes, we believe that mobile responsiveness is crucial for any local government website. This is because many of your residents will engage with your site via a mobile or tablet, rather than a computer. By building sites that are mobile responsive, we ensure that your content is user-friendly for everyone, no matter what device they prefer to use.

Hear from our local government website clients

ALYKA conducted user research, validated with data, and meticulously redesigned our website with the everyday Swan customer in mind. Their commitment to accessibility and usability was evident throughout the project lifecycle. The site's intuitive navigation, clean design, and improved language have received overwhelmingly positive customer feedback since its launch. We’re stoked with the recognition of this global award (Kentico Global Site of the Year, 2023).

This website is the fruition of over a year's worth of effort in customer research, planning, information architecture, user experience design, useability testing, and content rewriting. Almost 300 community members have taken part in shaping the site via surveys, online testing and one-on-one usability testing sessions, to help us ensure it meets their needs. A big focus was on making information easier to find and read. We are so happy with the website, and we’re absolutely thrilled that Kentico has recognised it with this award (Kentico Site of the Month, August 2022).

The City was delighted to partner with Alyka to redevelop the City of Joondalup corporate website. This project came with its fair share of challenges but the team’s ability to innovate, troubleshoot, and deliver a high-quality website ensured that we not only met but exceeded expectations. Alyka’s ability to collaborate, solve problems, and push the boundaries of what’s possible has resulted in a product that we can all be immensely proud of. The City of Joondalup now has a website that truly reflects its values and serves its community.

Ready for a website refresh?

The appearance of an outdated website is usually the first thing users notice, but there are probably deeper usability issues going on under the surface. These issues compromise user experience, making it harder for people to use your site effectively.
