Accessible Web Design

At ALYKA, we specialise in crafting accessible websites that not only meet legal compliance standards but also enhance usability for everyone, including those with disabilities. We work to ensure your website is navigable, readable, and functional for all users, creating a seamless digital experience.

Accessible UI design

When we build sites, each pixel contributes to providing an accessible user interface that works for you and your users. Our Kentico CMS is already optimised to support and meet WC3 (The World Wide Web Consortium) guidelines for accessibility, and we optimise our designs and formatting to ensure the best experience for all users.

Accessible web development

Our expert team of in-house developers are well-versed in accessibility requirements and work to build sites that are compliant with Web Content Accessibility Guideline version 2.2 Level AA and Level AAA. We're extensively experienced in digital projects with a strong focus on useability and accessibility. This is especially helpful for meeting the unique needs of local governments and large corporations.

Accessible content

Whether we’re writing your content from scratch or checking and enhancing your existing content, we keep accessibility front of mind. Readability is key, but it doesn’t have to come at the cost of engaging and informative content. We pride ourselves on being able to balance these elements to create great content.

Accessible web development

Step 1: Discovery

At the start of any website project, we’ll meet with you for a kick-off to discuss your goals for your new site and any preferences you have. During this meeting, we’ll confirm the scope of work to be completed and the project deliverables.

Step 2: Requirements

Website requirements provide a blueprint for how your website will be designed and built. Your project manager will prepare the requirements document based on your discussions. The document will detail every template and module your site will use and will guide the whole project. We’ll then create 2.2 AA accessible User Experience wireframes that show you the layout of pages on your new site. These will be prototyped so you can navigate through the structure of your website and identify any critical user journey issues.

Step 3: Design

Accessibility is at the forefront of all of our design decisions. We will work with you to understand your preferences for website look and feel. We’ll then create a design that aligns with these preferences and meets accessibility requirements. Once approved, the design will be applied to the wireframes so you can see how your accessible site will look.

Step 4: Development and QA testing

The requirements and the approved design are then given to the development team to build the accessible site. Once the site is built, our expert testing team will complete technical, functional and device testing to ensure the website is top shelf on all platforms. You’ll then receive training to populate content and also have the opportunity to test the site. When you’re happy with it, the site will be ready to go live.

Frequently asked questions

What is accessibility in web design?

Accessible website design is about making your site as easy to use as possible for as many people as possible. It should be a core consideration when developing both visual and written content.

The WCAG outlines four principles for measuring the usability and accessibility of a website. WCAG design should be:

  • Perceivable - content can be seen and/or heard
  • Operable - users can easily navigate and interact with content
  • Understandable - content should be clear and easy to follow
  • Robust - content should be compatible with various technologies and assistive devices

What’s the difference between accessible web design and accessible web development?

Design and development both play a crucial role in creating an accessible online experience.

Accessible web design is concerned with the visual and structural aspects of a website, ensuring that content is easily perceivable and navigable for all users, including those with disabilities.

On the other hand, accessible web development focuses on the coding and technical implementation necessary to make the website functional and compatible with assistive technologies, like screen readers. This ensures that all interactive elements work properly for all users.

Are accessibility requirements legally enforceable?

Yes, they are. The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) outlines that all websites must be accessible to people with disabilities. Failure to comply with the DDA can give rise to legal action. Though the WCAG are not legally enforceable, following them is the best way to comply with the DDA.
